cool off in the desert heat

When most think of Phoenix, they think of dry, desert heat. But what most don't realize is there are many lakes to explore just a short drive away. Head east from Phoenix to discover many lakes created by the damming of the Salt River. There's something for both thrill-seekers and those looking to relax.

stunning canyon lake

With camping close by, Canyon Lake encapsulates the idea of a desert oasis. Post up in one of the many lakeside camping spots before heading to the marina for kayak, fishing or speed boat rentals. For a unique dining experience, check out the Dolly Steamboat or get your "cowboy" on at Tortilla Flat, the last surviving stagecoach stop along the Apache Trail.

Locals know it as a "party on water", Salt River Tubing provides a choice of 2-hour, 4 hour or 6 hour floating adventures. Everything you'll need is provided for a small fee, but sunscreen and refreshments are your responsibility (absolutely no glass)!

cliff jump at Saguaro lake

There are plenty of ways to enjoy Saguaro Lake, but for those looking to test their courage, hike to the secret, local cliff jumping spot. Upon entering the marina, stay left and drive until the road ends. From there, hike the trail with the lake on your right for about 10 minutes. You'll know you've arrived when you catch locals sunbathing on the rocks.
